Fascia and soffit cleaning explained

Fascias and soffits are the boards that run along the edge of your roof, the fascia is the vertical board the gutter is fixed to, and the soffit is the horizontal board tucked underneath. They close off and protect the roof edge. Over time they collect algae, grime, cobwebs and traffic film, which looks especially bad on white uPVC. Cleaning them protects the boards and instantly lifts the appearance of the whole house.

What fascias and soffits actually do

These boards are not just cosmetic. The fascia carries the guttering and seals the bottom edge of the roof, while the soffit ventilates the roof space and stops birds and pests getting in. Keeping them clean and in good condition helps them do their job and last longer.

Why they get dirty

Being right at the roofline, fascias and soffits are exposed to everything: rain splashback, algae and green growth in damp shaded spots, dust and pollution, and run-off from the roof and gutters. White uPVC, the most common modern material, shows every bit of this, going grey, green and streaky over a few years.

Why cleaning them matters

  • Appearance: clean white boards frame the roof and make the whole house look cared for, it is one of the most visible quick wins.
  • Protection: removing algae and grime stops build-up that can hold moisture against the boards.
  • Inspection: a clean is a chance to spot cracked boards, loose sections or blocked soffit vents early.

How fascias and soffits are cleaned

They are cleaned with a soft brush and a suitable uPVC cleaner, usually using reach poles or a ground-based system so the work is done safely without leaning ladders against the boards or gutters. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals, which can scratch or dull uPVC, much like cleaning uPVC window frames.

How often should it be done?

For most homes, once a year keeps fascias and soffits looking clean and prevents heavy build-up. North-facing rooflines, and those under trees or near busy roads, may benefit from more frequent cleaning. It makes sense to do it at the same time as gutter cleaning, since the access and equipment are the same.

Frequently asked questions

The fascia is the vertical board along the roof edge that the gutter is fixed to. The soffit is the horizontal board tucked underneath it. Together they close off and protect the roof edge, and the soffit also ventilates the roof space.

Algae thrives on the damp, shaded roofline, and the boards also collect dust, pollution and run-off from the roof and gutters. White uPVC shows this badly, going grey, green and streaky over a few years without cleaning.

Once a year suits most homes and prevents heavy build-up. North-facing rooflines, or those under trees or near busy roads, may need it more often. It is most efficient to clean them at the same time as the gutters.
