How much should you tip a cleaner in the UK?

In the UK, tipping a cleaner is not expected, but it is always appreciated. There is no fixed rule, but common gestures include a Christmas tip of around a week's pay for a regular cleaner, a small extra for an exceptional one-off job, or simply rounding up the bill. Tipping is entirely optional, and there are other genuinely valued ways to show appreciation, like reviews, referrals and being a reliable customer.

Is tipping a cleaner normal in the UK?

Unlike in some countries, the UK does not have a strong tipping culture for domestic services, and no cleaner expects a tip. Fair pay for the work is the baseline, not tips on top. So if you do not tip, there is no need to feel awkward, it is genuinely not expected. That said, a tip is a warm way to recognise work you are happy with.

How much do people usually tip?

  • Christmas: many people give a regular cleaner a festive tip of roughly one cleaning session's worth, or a thoughtful gift, as a thank you for the year.
  • One-off jobs: for a great deep clean or end of tenancy result, rounding up or a small extra is a kind gesture.
  • Regular cleaning: a tip is not expected each visit, the occasional thank you is plenty.

These are gestures, not rules, give what feels right and what you can afford.

Independent cleaner vs a company

How tips work can depend on who you have booked. With a self-employed cleaner, a tip goes directly to them. With a company, you may want to check how tips are shared, or give it directly to the cleaner who did the work so it reaches the right person. Either way, a sincere thank you and a tip given in person is always well received.

Other ways to show appreciation

Money is not the only way, and sometimes not the most valuable:

  • Leave a review: an honest online review genuinely helps a local cleaning business.
  • Refer friends and neighbours: word of mouth is the lifeblood of local cleaners.
  • Be a good customer: clear access, fair notice and prompt payment make a cleaner's life much easier.
  • A festive card or small gift: a simple, personal thank you goes a long way.
