How to clean a new-build home after moving in

Cleaning a new-build home means dealing with the fine construction dust, plaster residue, paint splashes and protective films that a brand-new house is full of, even when it looks pristine. Work top to bottom, expect to clean surfaces more than once as settled dust resettles, and pay attention to the spots builders rush, window tracks, sockets, skirting and inside units. A thorough first clean makes a new home genuinely yours.

Why new builds need a special clean

A new home looks immaculate, but construction generates incredibly fine dust, from plaster, sanding, cutting and sawdust, that settles into every surface, crevice and cavity. It is often not visible until you wipe a surface or the light catches it. New builds also commonly have protective films, stickers, plaster flecks and paint splashes left behind. A normal clean is not enough; new builds need a specific approach.

Tackle the fine dust first

Construction dust is the main challenge, and it resettles, so:

  • Work strictly top to bottom, ceilings and high edges, then walls, then surfaces, then floors.
  • Use a vacuum with a good filter (HEPA ideally) so you capture fine dust rather than blowing it around, see getting rid of dust.
  • Wipe with damp microfibre to trap dust, not dry cloths that scatter it.
  • Expect to go over surfaces more than once over the first days as dust settles out of the air.

Remove films, stickers and residue

  • Peel protective films off appliances, baths, shower screens, worktops and window frames.
  • Remove manufacturer stickers from windows, units and sanitaryware.
  • Wipe off plaster flecks, paint splashes and silicone smears, carefully on glass.
  • Clean inside kitchen units and wardrobes, where dust and offcuts collect.

Don't forget the rushed spots

The areas builders tend to leave are exactly where grime hides: window tracks and frames, around sockets and switches, radiator tops and backs, skirting boards, door frames, and the edges of rooms. Inside the oven and extractor often need attention before first use too. These details make the difference between "looks clean" and "is clean".

Clean before you fully unpack

As with any move, the easiest time to clean thoroughly is before the furniture and boxes are in, see our move-in cleaning checklist. With empty rooms you can reach every surface and get ahead of the dust before it settles into soft furnishings.

When to book an after-builders clean

If the dust feels endless, or you would rather start settled and clean, a professional after-builders or new-build clean is designed exactly for this, the deep dust, residue and detail that a normal clean misses. It is the reliable way to get a new home genuinely dust-free from day one.
