How to clean a conservatory roof safely

The safest way to clean a conservatory roof is from the ground, using a soft brush on an extendable water-fed pole. You should never stand or walk on the roof, as conservatory glass and polycarbonate are not designed to bear weight and can crack or give way. With the right equipment you can reach the whole roof safely, lift off moss, algae and grime, and rinse to a clear, streak-free finish.

Why you should not climb on the roof

Conservatory roofs, whether glass or polycarbonate, are glazing, not a walkable surface. Putting your weight on them risks cracking panels, breaking seals or a serious fall. This is the single most important safety point: reach the roof from the ground or from a stable, correctly footed access point, never by standing on the glazing itself.

The right method, step by step

A water-fed pole system makes this a straightforward ground-level job. The pure water it uses dries without spots, so there is no need to climb up and squeegee.

  • Clear loose debris and overhanging leaves first.
  • Wet the roof and let any moss or algae soften.
  • Work top to bottom with a soft brush head, in gentle, overlapping strokes.
  • Pay attention to the bars, seals and the join with the gutters.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water and let it air-dry.

Glass vs polycarbonate: handle both gently

Polycarbonate scratches more easily than glass, so avoid abrasive pads and stiff brushes on it. For both materials, a soft brush and plenty of water is the rule. Never use harsh scourers, wire brushes or strong solvents, which can damage the surface or the seals.

Do not forget the gutters and frames

Conservatory gutters block quickly with roof debris, which leads to overflow and damp. Clean the frames, bars, fascias and guttering at the same time as the roof for the best result. If the gutters are heavily blocked, our gutter cleaning service can clear them safely from the ground.

How often should you clean a conservatory roof?

Once or twice a year is usually enough to keep a conservatory bright and well maintained. Properties under trees or in shaded, damp spots build up moss and algae faster and may need more frequent attention. For a wider view of timing, see our guide on how often to clean your windows.

When to call a professional

If the roof is high, steeply pitched, heavily soiled or you are not confident reaching it safely, professional conservatory cleaning is the sensible choice. We clean the roof, glass, frames and guttering, inside and out, with the correct equipment, across Derby and the surrounding area.
