How to remove oil stains from a driveway

The best way to remove an oil stain from a driveway is to act quickly: absorb as much fresh oil as possible, apply a degreaser or dish soap, scrub, then rinse. Fresh stains often lift completely, while old, set-in stains are harder and may need a dedicated concrete degreaser or professional hot-water pressure washing. The key principle is to draw the oil out of the surface rather than just spreading it around.

For fresh oil spills

  1. Soak up the liquid oil with cat litter, sand or baking soda.
  2. Leave it to absorb for a few hours, then sweep it up.
  3. Apply washing-up liquid or a degreaser and a little water.
  4. Scrub with a stiff brush, working it into the stain.
  5. Rinse thoroughly and repeat if needed.

For older, set-in stains

Stains that have soaked in for weeks or months need stronger treatment. A purpose-made concrete or driveway degreaser, left to dwell and then scrubbed, works better than household products. Several rounds may be needed. Patience and repetition beat brute force here.

Concrete vs block paving

Concrete is porous and absorbs oil readily, so act fast. Block paving can be cleaned similarly, but remember that heavy scrubbing and washing may disturb the joint sand, which then needs replacing, see block paving cleaning and re-sanding. On natural stone, test any product on a small area first.

When to call a professional

For large, old or stubborn oil stains, professional hot-water pressure washing combined with the right degreaser lifts what household methods cannot. It is also the safest option if you are unsure about the surface. It helps with fresh spills by absorbing the oil before it soaks in. Sprinkle it on, leave it to draw out the oil, then sweep up and wash the area. For set-in stains, a dedicated degreaser works better.
