The ultimate spring cleaning checklist, room by room

Spring cleaning is a top-to-bottom reset that tackles the jobs your weekly clean skips: windows, skirting boards, behind appliances, inside cupboards, light fittings and soft furnishings. The most efficient approach is to declutter first, then work one room at a time, cleaning from the top down so dust falls onto surfaces you tackle last. Here is a room-by-room checklist to follow.

Start by decluttering

Clear surfaces and clutter before you clean anything. It is far quicker to clean a tidy room, and decluttering is half the feeling of a fresh home. Bag up items to donate or bin as you go.

Kitchen

  • Clean inside the oven, microwave and extractor filter.
  • Empty, wipe and reorganise cupboards and the fridge.
  • Descale the kettle, taps and sink.
  • Pull out appliances and clean behind them.
  • Wipe doors, handles, skirting and splashbacks.

Bathroom

  • Descale the shower head, screen, tiles and taps.
  • Treat any mould on sealant and grout.
  • Clean and reorganise cabinets, clear out old products.
  • Wash bath mats and launder shower curtains.

Living areas and bedrooms

  • Wash windows, frames and sills, inside and out.
  • Dust light fittings, shelves, skirting and radiators.
  • Vacuum under furniture and rotate or air mattresses.
  • Wash cushion covers, throws and curtains where possible.
  • Wipe doors, switches and handles.

Do not forget the outside

Spring is also the ideal time to refresh the exterior. Clear winter debris from gutters, pressure wash the patio and clean the windows. See our guides on removing moss from a patio and how often to clean your gutters.
